Poke Poke

Today Kael got his very first set of vaccines. It wasn't easy for me. He didn't seem to mind the initial poke but once she pushed the medicine in it was all blood curdling screams from then on out ( although his screams were louder yesterday when I accidentally got soap in his eye). He was given two injections on either leg and one drinkable vaccine. It's so sad that we ended the doctor appointment on such a bad note because he was so happy when the doctor was in the room. All smiles and coos for him! The medicine has made him fussy and generally not feeling well today.
He spent a lot of the day sleeping and the rest softly crying, as if to tell me that he just doesn't feel all that great. Poor little man. I keep telling myself that all this will make him stronger and is better in the long run and this momentary yuckiness is just a little blip of time in the grand scheme of things. After his shots I brought him down to the car and fed him. He fell right to sleep when he was all done and I was glad to have been able to soothe my baby after such a traumatic little experience.

Today Kael recieved these vaccines;

(these are the standard two month vaccines given in the US)

DTaP: Diphtheria ( an upper respiratory infection), Tetnus, and Acellular Pertussis ( whooping cough)

Hib: Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine- can cause meningitis, pneumonia, severe swelling of the throat, infections of the blood, joints, and covering of the heart.

IPV: Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine

PCV: Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine- A vaccine to prevent one type of bacterial meningitis

Rota: Rotavirus Vaccine- A vaccine given to prevent stomach flu in infants and toddlers

Kael weighs 13.5 pounds and is 23 inches long. The doc said he is looking great and we will be back in a month!
